Make it happen - Priyanka Chopra's column in HT today!!

We all have dreams. No matter who you are and where you have come from, you have a dream. It could be for your job, your life, marriage, home, car, etc. there is always something that we dream about. But what I find most amazing is what little effort we make to turn our dreams into reality.

I have come to realise that it is human tendency to find 15 reasons why things can’t work, rather than look at finding the one way to make it work. Over the years, through various interactions I have had with people via one-to-one chats, emails and now via social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, the most common question that has been put to me has always been, “How did you do it and what do I do to make it happen for me?” Different people had different dreams and they were sitting there, waiting for that one big opportunity to come or that one person to appear to make those dreams come true.

That, in my opinion, is where the problem lies. Speaking from my own experience, if I just sat by, waiting for things to unfold, I wouldn’t have been where I am today. Yes, I did have some key opportunities that opened the doors for me, but if I just sat by, nothing would have happened. I am a firm believer that opportunity knocks on everyone’s door. It is important to recognise the knock, open the door, invite the opportunity in to your life but what is most critical is how you take it forward.

First and foremost, you need to make the decision of what you want to do. Spend some time to research it and see if it’s really something you want to do. Then start making plans on how you can achieve your dream. Remember, nothing comes easy. On the path to success, you WILL face failure and you have to be prepared for that so that you will have the courage to carry on regardless. The most important factor in all of this, is hard work. There is no replacement for it and it always, always yields results.

I can hear the thoughts running through your head right now... “what about luck? Some people are just so lucky!” I do agree that some people are luckier than others, but it’s never a driving factor. A key factor in making dreams come true is the human will. I have learnt that if you put your mind to something, there is nothing that can stop you. So my advice to you all you dreamers... stop thinking and dreaming... step out and fight to make it a reality... You will never regret it!

We can do it too - Priyanka Chopra's column in HT today!!

Under the cover of darkness, when the world is asleep, I sometimes sneak out of my house (always with a girlfriend in tow) to discover the smaller ‘pleasures’ of life. Helmets on, we zip through the bylanes of suburban Mumbai enjoying these secret, somewhat forbidden moments. Hey... Why should boys have all the fun?

I was reminded of these really fun moments a few days ago as I prepared to shoot for a new commercial for the Hero Honda Pleasure, a brand that I endorse! A long car drive transported me from the calm surroundings and wonderful weather of Coorg to the bustling Bangalore city which welcomed me with open arms and a short burst of rain. I was excited, as I always am, to shoot for commercials. They are in many ways like mini movies, which tell a story in 60 seconds or less! The previous commercials for the ‘Pleasure’ were so much fun to shoot... anybody remember Manjeet, the ‘silly village girl’ who got the better of the ‘foreign returned’ boy? I had tons of fun zipping down the fields in Punjab shooting for that ad!

I must confess that I don’t get to be on one often enough and those late night rides are few and far between, but I can tell you, a bike ride is like an instant cup of happiness for me. While on the sets for the ad, my team and I had a very interesting discussion on the whole concept of ‘why should boys have all the fun?’ which is the tagline for this brand.

It really is amazing how all the girls had so many stories of those defiant moments when they did all these crazy things that seem to say to the boys, ‘If you can do... so can we’. Some of the stories had me rolling on the floor with the laughter, while others shocked me by the kind of risks that these girls took. I don’t know what it is, but the whole Mars vs Venus battle of the sexes can sometimes lead us to do really stupid things... fun, yes, but not always the smartest things to do.

I’d love to hear some of your ‘Why should boys have all the fun?’ stories. I’m fairly certain you girls have tons to share. In the meanwhile, I’m off to check out my latest acquisition... a sparkling red lil beauty called the Pleasure... a gift from my friends at Hero Honda. Hey, haven’t you heard? Girls just wanna have fun.

Go for Records, not just Gold Medals!

By: Ian Faria:

What would you do differently, if you knew that none of us... will not use even 1% of our intelligence... in a lifetime? The first time I came across this statistic, I was stunned... how could it be possible... that we could achieve as much as we have.... by using less than a percent of our intelligence??? More interestingly... what could we achieve... by using just one percent more? We would be like Einstein... or may be even greater?

The point I am driving is... that we have huge untapped resources, and the first thing to do is to set bigger goals... or dream bigger dreams. I have been working with people through training and coaching, and I am often quite surprised how people are not able to see what they are capable of. Many times, I have to set the bar... much higher than they were willing to go... and when they achieve it... they feel... WOOW!... that was easy! After Nicole reached the pinnacle of the Miss India.... she too knows that this is only the starting point for the next big journey. The important lesson to take is ... she played for TOP

POSITION... she had already set her sights on the MISS WORLD CROWN... that is the reason I had advised her to not participate in last year’s contest. The field was a lot more open last year... but the question I had posed to her was... You can win the Miss India, but are you ready to win the Miss Universe? (Last year this contest was a part of the PFMI). Her answer was... I don’t think so... so she dropped out.... and made up her mind to get ready for the PFMI 2010. In the end... she got the second place... from the judges... but in her mind... she has accepted it as a part of the terrain... and she has put that aside... as she prepares for the gruelling Miss Earth pageant. A new mountain to climb... and she will do well in this one too...

So my challenge to YOU is... how high will you set your bar? Remember... you have nothing to lose... set the bar 50% higher than what you first thought was achievable... and keep this in mind...

Extraordinary goals will stretch your Imagination, test your abilities, and forge new relationships. Anything less.... is ordinary.

Since each of us carries extraordinary capabilities... has extraordinary intelligence... and has already done extraordinary things... let’s not lower the standard... but instead... lets shoot for the stars... and soon we will create records that others will try to reach.

IAN FARIA.
