Breathing therapy

The nose has a left and a right side; we use both to inhale and exhale.

Actually they are different; you would be able to feel the difference.
... The right side represents the sun, left side represents the moon.
During a headache, try to close your right nose and use your left nose to breathe.

In about 5 mins, your headache will go?
If you feel tired, just reverse, close your left nose and breathe through your right nose.
After a while, you will feel your mind is refreshed.

Right side belongs to 'hot', so it gets heated up easily, left side belongs to 'cold'.

Most females breathe with their left noses, so they get "cooled off" faster.

Most of the guys breathe with their right noses, they get worked up.

Do you notice the moment we wake up, which side breathes faster? Left or right? ?

If left is faster, you will feel tired.
So, close your left nose and use your right nose for breathing, you will get refreshed quickly.
This can be taught to kids, but it is more effective when practiced by adults.

My friend used to have bad headaches and was always visiting the doctor.

There was this period when he suffered headache literally every night, unable to study.

He took painkillers, did not work.

He decided to try out the breathing therapy here: closed his right nose and breathed through his left nose.

In less than a week, his headaches were gone! He continued the exercise for one month.

This alternative natural therapy without medication is something that he has experienced.

So, why not give it a try?

Italian doctors save baby with smallest artificial heart

An Italian heart surgeon holds a tiny titanium pump, the world's smallest artificial heart, which was implanted in a baby, in Rome .

ROME (Reuters) - Italian doctors have saved the life of a 16-month-old boy by implanting the world's smallest artificial heart to keep the infant alive until a donor was found for a transplant.

The doctors at Rome 's Bambino Gesu hospital said the operation was carried out last month and made public this week. The baby, whose identity has not been disclosed, was kept alive for 13 days before the transplant and is now doing well.

The baby was suffering from dilated myocardiopathy, a heart muscle disease which normally causes stretched or enlarged fibers of the heart. The disease gradually makes the heart weaker, stopping its ability to pump blood effectively.

"This is a milestone," surgeon Antonio Amodeo told Reuters television, adding that while the device was now used as bridge leading to a transplant, in the future it could be permanent.

Before the implant, the child also had a serious infection around a mechanical pump that had been fitted earlier to support the function of his natural heart.

"From a surgical point of view, this was not really difficult. The only difficulty that we met is that the child was operated on several times before," he said.

The tiny titanium pump weighs only 11 grams and can handle a blood flow of 1.5 liters a minute. An artificial heart for adults weighs 900 grams.

Amodeo said the baby had become family and his team wanted to do everything to help him.

"The patient was in our intensive care unit since one month of age. So he was a mascot for us, he was one of us," the doctor said.

"Every day, every hour, for more than one year he was with us. So when we had a problem we couldn't do anything more than our best," he said.

Doctors said the device, invented by American Doctor Robert Jarvik, had been previously tested only on animals.

The hospital needed special permission from Jarvik and the Italian health ministry before going ahead with the procedure.

Cook islands

The Cook Islands is a self-governing parliamentary democracy in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. The 15 small islands have a total land area of 240 square kilometres (92.7 sq mi), but the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers 1,800,000 square kilometres (690,000 sq mi) of ocean. Its capital is Avarua.

With about 100,000 visitors travelling to the islands in the 2010-11 financial year, tourism is the country's main industry, and the leading element of the economy, far ahead of offshore banking, pearls, and marine and fruit exports.

Defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, in consultation with the Cook Islands. In recent times, the Cook Islands have adopted an increasingly independent foreign policy. Although Cook Islanders are citizens of New Zealand, they have the status of Cook Islands nationals, which is not given to other New Zealand citizens

Calcium pills 'double heart attack risk'

Calcium supplements taken by millions people every day can double the risk of heart attacks,
according to a study, while researchers say they do little to protect bones against fractures.
By Stephen Adams

Despite the link to heart problems, calcium pills are important for those at risk of osteoporosis Recommended by government advisers as a safe way to help fight osteoporosis, they are taken by up to 5m people in Britain.

But researchers say a new study adds to mounting evidence that the supplements are"not safe or particularly effective".

The latest study, which followed 24,000 middle-aged and elderly Germans for 11 years, found taking calcium pills roughly doubled the risk of having a heart attack.

Writing today in the journal Heart, German and Swiss academics find that heart attack risk "might be substantially increased by taking calcium supplements".

They conclude the pills "should be taken with caution" because they raise the annual risk of a heart attack from about one in 700 people to one in 350.

The scientists' findings are at odds with Department of Health advice, published on the NHS Choices website, that "taking 1,500mg or less of calcium supplements is unlikely to cause any harm".

It only warns: "Taking high doses of calcium could lead to stomach pain and diarrhoea."

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) also recommends them for women who need treatment for osteoporosis, unless they already get enough calcium from their diet.

Calcium is essential for healthy bones and adults need about 700mg a day. Clinicians agree it is best to get it through food but some people find this difficult.

Taking it in pill form has become very popular - either alone, in combination with magnesium or vitamin D, or as part of a multi-vitamin. Pills often contain 500mg calcium or more.

According to Mintel, the market research firm, 11 per cent of British adults - equivalent to 5m people - took calcium supplements in the last year.

However, commenting on the new research by the University of Zurich and the German Cancer Reserch Centre in Heidelberg, published in Heart, two leading researchers warn: "The safety of calcium supplements is now
coming under considerable scrutiny."

They say there is strong evidence that taking pill calcium floods the blood with the mineral,
leading to hardening of the arteries and raising heart attack risk.

Dr Mark Bolland and Professor Ian Reid of Auckland University in New Zealand say today's study "reinforce the conclusions" of previous research.

A 2010 BMJ review covering 12,000 people found supplements raised the risk by a third, they say, while a 2011 study of 28,000 people found they increased heart attacks by more than a quarter.

A recent Australian study was even more "sobering", according to pair. That report, published earlier this year, found "elderly and frail" people who took 600mg daily pills were 76 per cent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease over three years than those not on them.

"The evidence is steadily mounting for a real cardiovascular adverse effect from the use of calcium supplements," they write.

Evidence also suggested that "the anti-fracture effects of calcium [supplements] are modest".

They conclude: "The consistent evidence is that calcium supplements do more harm than good and that other interventions are preferable for reducing the risk of osteoporosis fractures...

"It is now becoming clear that taking this micronutrient in one or two daily boluses [pills] is not natural, in that it does not reproduce the same metabolic effcts as calcium in food.

"The evidence is also becoming steadily stronger that it is not safe, nor is it particularly effective."
Dr Claire Bowring of the National Osteoporosis Society said "care" was needed with calcium supplements.

"If you get all of the calcium that you need from your diet then a supplement will not be necessary," she said.

"Supplementation may be warranted if you are unable to get enough calcium in your diet,
but it needs to be done with consideration.

"If you have a heart condition or if you feel you may be at risk of a heart attack it is important to talk to your GP."

Dr Carrie Ruxton, of the Health Supplements Information Service, said it was "irresponsible" to advise women with osteoporosis not to take supplements "on the basis of one flawed study".

It lacked information on calcium doses and results could have been skewed by differences between participants underlying health, she claimed.

She said: "Osteoporosis is a real issue for women and it is irresponsible for scientists to advise that women cut out calcium supplements on the basis of one flawed survey, particularly when the link between calcium, vitamin D and /bone health is endorsed by the European Food Safety Authority."

*MORE people now understand the need to get a few minutes' of direct sunlight exposure to help build strong bones, according to the National Osteoporosis Society.

It found a third now know the importance of getting a few minutes daily sun exposure without sunscreen,
to help the body manufacture enough vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones.

Three years ago only six per cent understood the importance of daily direct sunlight, according to spokesman Siobhan Hallmark.

The charity launches its annual Sunlight Campaign today. It advises people to get 10 minutes of direct sun exposure on bare skin, once or twice a day, between May and September.

A Department of Health spokesperson said: "We will consider the study carefully once the complete article has been published."The majority of people do not need to take a calcium supplement.

A healthy balanced diet will provide all the nutrients, including calcium, that they need.

Good sources of calcium include milk and dairy foods, fortified dairy food alternatives, e.g. soya drink and green leafy vegetables."

New Water Cities and Villages around the world.

Italy's Venice is turning dry plagued by record low tide and thereby the city once called the 'Queen of the Adriatic'is sinking from the middle of the 20th century.

Hopwever, similar to Venice, the following old water cities are still remains there as shown below :

The City of Ganvie : The village of Ganvie was established in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries by the Tofinu people, when Dahomeyan warriors raided their countryside for captives to sell to the European slave traders. Originally based on farming, the City's main industries other than tourism are now fishing and fish farming. Built on stilts and linked by bridges the water City is also served by water taxis and has its own schools, hospitals, restaurants, shops, mosques and petrol station. From a distance, although many of the dwellings look neglected and run-down, they actually have all the modern amenities including air conditioning, satellite television, Internet access, plumbing, and electricity. People have lived in this village for over 1300 years and some of them keep potted plants and chickens.

Tips for a great smile

You most certainly brush your teeth, as you're keen on having a pleasant breath and a nice, white smile.
But are you brushing correctly?

Are you doing it at the right time? We've compiled a guide to common brushing mistakes, and how to do it right.
You are brushing at the wrong time You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, though three times is better.
Brushing before bed is a must.
Removing bacteria from your mouth prevents them from attacking your teeth overnight.

In the morning, brush your teeth before breakfast, to remove the bacteria and plaque that has accumulated overnight.
You can also brush after lunch, but not more.
Brushing too often can damage your gums.

You're brushing and spitting Once you've brushed your teeth, you probably rinse your mouth
with water to get rid of the toothpaste flavor.
This is a mistake. You should not rinse your mouth, merely spit out the toothpaste.
This will leave a coating of fluoride on your teeth, which helps prevent tooth decay by inhibiting the chemical processes of plaque bacteria.
You’re not brushing for long enough, or too long A quick once over will not do.
You should brush 2 to 3 minutes each time.
Anything less, and you may not properly clean your teeth.
Brushing for too long may irritate your gums.

You are using the wrong toothbrush
If you shop for your toothbrush on the basis of price or colour, think again.
The key thing in choosing a toothbrush is head size and bristle hardness.
The brush should be the right size for your mouth, not too big.

You can tell it's too big if you're struggling to open your mouth wide to brush.
Buy a brush with bristles that are soft, as hard bristles can irritate your gums, especially if you brush too hard.
The bristles should be able to remove the plaque but not damage your teeth.

You're brushing the wrong way.
The recommended way to brush your teeth is not with horizontal strokes along your gums.
Instead, the current method recommended by the British Dental Health Foundation is to place the brush
at 45 degrees against your gum line and move it in small circular movements on all the surfaces of every tooth.
Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower, keeping the bristles angled against the gum line.
Brush the biting surfaces of the teeth.
To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make
several small circular strokes with the front part of the brush.
Finally, brush your tongue.

This will remove bacteria from its surface and freshen your breath.
You’re not rinsing your toothbrush enough Bacteria grows on your toothbrush, so it is important to rinse it before and after use.
It will also remove any toothpaste that may be left on the brush.
After rinsing the brush, shake out the moisture, as a moist brush is a breeding ground for bacteria.
Your toothbrush is too old
The longer you use your toothbrush, the more bent and misshapen the bristles will be,
which undermines their effectiveness.
You should replace your brush every three months, or once your bristles have lost their flexibility.

You're not flossing You may be diligent at brushing your teeth, but if you're not flossing regularly,
you're failing to clean your teeth properly.
Bits of food will get stuck between your teeth in places where the bristles don't reach.
The food will decay and bacteria will attack your teeth and gums.
The only way to remove food may be by flossing, which is why you should make a habit of doing so daily.
Buy the right floss for your teeth - waxed if you have closely spaced teeth, or tougher floss if you have rough tooth edges.
Make sure you use enough floss, as reusing it may simply move bacteria between teeth.

Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience

Learn to view  everything as a worthwhile experience.

May you find serenity and tranquility in a world You may not always understand.

May the pain you have known and conflict you have experienced Give you the strength to walk through life Facing each new situation with courage and  optimism.

Always know that there are those whose love and understanding Will always be there, even when you feel most alone.
May you discover enough goodness in others To believe in a world of peace.

May a kind word, a reassuring touch, a warm smile be yours Every day of your life,

And may you give these gifts as well as receive them.Remember the sunshine when the storm seems unending.

Teach love to those who know hate, And let that love embrace you as you go into the world.

May the teaching of those you admire become part of you, So that you may call upon them.

Remember, those whose lives you have touched And who have touched yours are always a part of you,

Even if the encounters  were less than you would have wished. It is the content of the encounter that is more important than it's form.

May you not become too concerned with material matters, But instead place immeasurable value on the goodness in your heart.

Find time in each day to see the beauty and love in the world around you.

Realize that each person has limitless abilities, But each of us is different in our own way.

What you may feel you lack in one regard May be more than compensated for in another.

What you feel you lack in the present May become one of your strengths in the future.

May you see your future as one filled with promise and possibility.

Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience.

May you find enough inner  strength to determine your own worth by yourself,

And not be dependent on another's judgment of your accomplishments.

May you always feel loved.

Bnefits of being polite

We all believe in the philosophy that the essence of life is talking. Communicating with others is as necessary as food. If we dont, we tend to fall ill. Today people are rarely talking.
The art of conversation has almost died down. People just usually sit and chat in their office breaks about things that are not even worth thinking about. Lets face it; we all are going towards doom where each one of us is talking to pass/kill time. The art of using communication is no more existing. People are concerned about others influence in their lives and not about their influence in others life.
It is an unbelievable thing that an effective communication through polite words can have wonderful impact on you and others lives as well. You can win the hearts of many people, climb the corporate ladder, have promotions but not have wonderful relationship with people around you.
The path to a successful life comes thorough the stairs of politeness. An act of politeness can do wonders that no monetary thing can do. Let us go deep in the art of efficient speaking by these methods.

Talking about ideas and not people

Its truly said, great minds talk about ideas and small minds talk about people. Politeness is an attitude of life. Talking about ideas heightens your politeness towards innovations and stimulates your mind too. This is effective for the speaker and the listener both. To start talking about people you can breathe out all negative energies about anyone: latest crush, which dress she wears, which perfume she uses, her bad attitude. The idea is that everything you talk about people usually comes negative. This develops a feeling of self love and comparison at all means. You do not value your life as much as you do to others.

Using intellect instead of the tongue

Usually people chatter on at length not worrying about the impact it would have on others. Since people are so occupied in themselves theyd rather talk about themselves only. This instigates them to speak rubbish endlessly. Have you ever thought how much of an impact we can have on others by our words? By trying to use our brains before speaking, we will save others sentiments and preserve a healthy relationship between our near ones.

Avoiding gossip
The one who usually starts a gossip or backbiting about someone does not know that he is the one to have the last laugh. People who start commenting and spreading rumors about others usually end up in a muck of politics and bickering about themselves from the other end. Such people should be avoided at arm's length. Even listening to gossip is as harmful since the listener had the power to listen to negative communication. This unhealthy gossiping could have been stopped if the listener would have ignored the speaker.

Exchange of compliments

We should not limit our compliment intake be restricted to our close relatives. People like our helpers such as servants, cleaners, house maids are those on whom we can count on. Speaking politely to them will ensure that your day is made. They are the ones who offer your services to make your life comfortable. So we should make endeavors to enrich their lives by complimenting and praising them.
Look for positive things in negative people

We all have negative and positive sides. Nobody on this earth has a squeaky clean nature. We all have flaws, however some people are observed negatively by their rude behavior and we become very judgmental about them putting them in the negative category. We should understand that people who are rude have their own weaknesses. They do not choose to be like that. Frustrations at work or domestic front make them act in this behavior. Such people should be offered more help than others comparatively. Talking politely with them will make a difference in their lives and yours too.

Feel positive about you all the time

Quite often we do not realize that we subconsciously become negative. Pent up emotions and unfulfilled desires make us behave rudely towards others and emit negative radiations from the body. Thus we tend to overreact and become rude and harsh to others in some or the other way. This might demolish the social circle that we have. So politeness in the hearts at all means will result in polite attitude.
Whatever is rested in your heart is bound to come out in the open some or the other day. Make sure you have a prosperous life with a polite attitude and selfless love. This will make you immortal in the hearts of millions as people are going to remember for your polite words and not by your status.
A photographer once clicked a photograph of ex-president of India, Dr. Kalam with a shawl placed on his shoulder. After the photo shoot was over, the photographer rudely took off the shawl and walked off. The President smiled. After being asked about his composed behaviouir, he politely answered that maybe the photographer needed the shawl more than he did, and continued his work.
People with big positions come and go but it is only their humble nature that draws millions of people towards them. Their polite words filled to the brim with modesty and love melt the hearts of even the rudest amongst the crowd. By talking politely to all we can make an impact on others lives.
