पहिलै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा धरि पाइता उदरै माहि ॥ Pahilai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā ḏẖar pā▫iṯā uḏrai māhi. In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord placed your soul in the womb.

दसी मासी मानसु कीआ वणजारिआ मित्रा करि मुहलति करम कमाहि ॥ Ḏasī māsī mānas kī▫ā vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā kar muhlaṯ karam kamāhi. In the tenth month, you were made into a human being, O my merchant friend, and you were given your allotted time to perform good deeds.

ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ मुहलति करि दीनी करम कमाणे जैसा लिखतु धुरि पाइआ ॥ Muhlaṯ kar ḏīnī karam kamāṇe jaisā likẖaṯ ḏẖur pā▫i▫ā. You were given this time to perform good deeds, according to your pre-ordained destiny.

मात पिता भाई सुत बनिता तिन भीतरि प्रभू संजोइआ ॥ Māṯ piṯā bẖā▫ī suṯ baniṯā ṯin bẖīṯar parabẖū sanjo▫i▫ā. God placed you with your mother, father, brothers, sons and wife.

करम सुकरम कराए आपे इसु जंतै वसि किछु नाहि ॥ Karam sukaram karā▫e āpe is janṯai vas kicẖẖ nāhi. God Himself is the Cause of causes, good and bad-no one has control over these things.

कहु नानक प्राणी पहिलै पहरै धरि पाइता उदरै माहि ॥१॥ Kaho Nānak parāṇī pahilai pahrai ḏẖar pā▫iṯā uḏrai māhi. ||1|| Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, the soul is placed in the womb. ||1|| दूजै पहरै रैणि कै वणजारिआ मित्रा भरि जुआनी लहरी देइ ॥ Ḏūjai pahrai raiṇ kai vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā bẖar ju▫ānī lahrī ḏe▫e. In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the fullness of youth rises in you like waves. बुरा भला न पछाणई वणजारिआ मित्रा मनु मता अहमेइ ॥ Burā bẖalā na pacẖẖāṇ▫ī vaṇjāri▫ā miṯrā man maṯā ahame▫e. You do not distinguish between good and evil, O my merchant friend-your mind is intoxicated with ego. बुरा भला न पछाणै प्राणी आगै पंथु करारा ॥ Burā bẖalā na pacẖẖāṇai parāṇī āgai panth karārā. Mortal beings do not distinguish between good and evil, and the road ahead is treacherous. पूरा सतिगुरु कबहूं न सेविआ सिरि ठाढे जम जंदारा ॥ Pūrā saṯgur kabahūʼn na sevi▫ā sir ṯẖādẖe jam janḏārā. They never serve the Perfect True Guru, and the cruel tyrant Death stands over their heads. धरम राइ जब पकरसि बवरे तब किआ जबाबु करेइ ॥ Ḏẖaram rā▫e jab pakras bavre ṯab ki▫ā jabāb kare▫i. When the Righteous Judge seizes you and interrogates you, O madman, what answer will you give him then? कहु नानक दूजै पहरै प्राणी भरि जोबनु लहरी देइ ॥२॥ Kaho Nānak ḏūjai pahrai parāṇī bẖar joban lahrī ḏe▫e. ||2|| Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, the fullness of youth tosses you about like waves in the storm. ||2||

बेद कतेब इफतरा भाई दिल का फिकरु न जाइ ॥ Beḏ kaṯeb ifṯarā bẖā▫ī ḏil kā fikar na jā▫e. The Vedas and the Scriptures are only make-believe, O Siblings of Destiny; they do not relieve the anxiety of the heart.

टुकु दमु करारी जउ करहु हाजिर हजूरि खुदाइ ॥१॥ Tuk ḏam karārī ja▫o karahu hājir hajūr kẖuḏā▫e. ||1|| If you will only center yourself on the Lord, even for just a breath, then you shall see the Lord face-to-face, present before you. ||1||

बंदे खोजु दिल हर रोज ना फिरु परेसानी माहि ॥ Banḏe kẖoj ḏil har roj nā fir paresānī māhi. . O human being, search your own heart every day, and do not wander around in confusion

इह जु दुनीआ सिहरु मेला दसतगीरी नाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Ih jo ḏunī▫ā sihar melā ḏasaṯgīrī nāhi. ||1|| rahā▫o. This world is just a magic-show; no one will be holding your hand. ||1||Pause||

दरोगु पड़ि पड़ि खुसी होइ बेखबर बादु बकाहि ॥ Ḏarog paṛ paṛ kẖusī ho▫e bekẖabar bāḏ bakāhi. Reading and studying falsehood, people are happy; in their ignorance, they speak nonsense.

हकु सचु खालकु खलक मिआने सिआम मूरति नाहि ॥२॥ Hak sacẖ kẖālak kẖalak mi▫āne si▫ām mūraṯ nāhi. ||2|| The True Creator Lord is diffused into His creation; He is not just the dark-skinned Krishna of legends. ||2||

असमान ‍िम्याने लहंग दरीआ गुसल करदन बूद ॥ Asmān mi▫yāne lahang ḏarī▫ā gusal karḏan būḏ. Through the Tenth Gate, the stream of nectar flows; take your bath in this.

करि फकरु दाइम लाइ चसमे जह तहा मउजूदु ॥३॥ Kar fakar ḏā▫im lā▫e cẖasme jah ṯahā ma▫ujūḏ. ||3|| Serve the Lord forever; use your eyes, and see Him ever-present everywhere. ||3||

अलाह पाकं पाक है सक करउ जे दूसर होइ ॥ Alāh pākaʼn pāk hai sak kara▫o je ḏūsar ho▫e. The Lord is the purest of the pure; only through doubt could there be another.

कबीर करमु करीम का उहु करै जानै सोइ ॥४॥१॥ Kabīr karam karīm kā uho karai jānai so▫e. ||4||1|| O Kabeer, mercy flows from the Merciful Lord; He alone knows who acts. ||4||1||
