

The route was originally proposed as a railway line in the early 20th century. The land was later adopted for public road use in the 1970s, and construction began in 1983.

Highway is the stretch of U.S. Highway 212 that connects Red Lodge, Mont., and
Cooke City, Mont., passing along the Montana-Wyoming border. Due to heavy
snowfall, the pass is usually open each year only from mid-May through
mid-October.
The Great Ocean Road was built by returned soldiers between
1919 and 1932 and is dedicated to those killed during World War I, making the
road the world’s largest war memorial. The road passes by many famous natural
landmarks, including the famous limestone formations known as the Twelve
Apostles.
